ABSTRACT

This study aimed to analyze the socio-environmental characteristics, executive and nutritional functions in children aged 6 to 7 years, from public schools in Alagoas, Brazil. A quantitative, cross-sectional and descriptive study was performed involving 64 children of the mentioned age group, from public schools located in Alagoas: Maceió, on the coast; Major Isidoro, in the hinterland and Palmeira dos Índios, in the country. Such analyzes were made through the application of neuropsychological tests and anthropometric assessment with children and food and socio-environmental surveys with their parents. As for the type of housing, 100% were made of masonry, with a bathroom present in 98.4%. All children reported with the habit of bathing in the river / lagoon, presented some pathology. There was no significant difference between cities in terms of the sociodemographic characteristics evaluated, with the same result occurring with the factors associated with the occurrence of diseases in children. The subtests of WISC-IV, were below the average in all municipalities, and the TAC and SCC were classified within the average. However, even though the ranking were divided between below average and average, it is possible to identify from the subtests of WISC-IV, that the general IQ showed a cognitive level below the average. There was also no significant difference in the anthropometric assessment (weight, height, BMI and IMCI) between the evaluated students. The average weight was 23.3 kg to 25 kg, the height between 1.23 m to 1.24 m, the BMI between 16.4 to 17; the IMCI from 2.8 to 3.0. Children were classified within the average. Regarding micronutrients (Ca, Fe, K, Mg and Na, and vitamins A, C, D, B1, B9 and B12) and calories, there was also no significant difference between the cities evaluated. The same occurred with macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids). This study showed [...].

ABSTRACT

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has spread rapidly across cities in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. The aim of this study was to investigate VL dynamics in a prospective cohort study of dogs in Juatuba, between 2010 and 2011, to confirm the incidence of Leishmania infantum, and to assess possible risk factors associated with infection. An observational and prospective closed cohort study was performed using serology testing in dogs, randomly selected from the whole municipality. All seronegative dogs, or dogs with inconclusive results were monitored using indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) at 6-month intervals. The dog's owners completed a semi-structured questionnaire to assess possible causal factors of seroconversion, and the responses were assessed using logistic regression. The canine incidence coefficient was 206/1,000 dogs per year (CI: 178-238), and a cluster was identified in an area with a high concentration of seropositive dogs, but a low overall canine population. Large dogs were identified as a risk factor and the following variables were identified as protection factors: dogs aged over 4 years, daily peridomicile cleaning, and better socioeconomic conditions. VL is spreading over a large area in Juatuba in a short period of time.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Trays with different number of cells (128, 200 and 288) and two substrates (coir and pine bark-based) were studied for thyme seedling production and plant development in hydroponic system. In both experiments, experimental design was in randomized blocks. Seedlings from cuttings were evaluated at 30 days as to root length and dry matter. At 40 days after transplanting, plants grown in hydroponic system were evaluated for shoot fresh matter, shoot dry matter and root dry matter. The highest root dry matter was detected in seedlings grown in coir-based substrate. Seedlings that presented the greatest root length were obtained by using trays with 128 and 200 cells. Thyme plants from seedlings produced in trays with 128 cells had higher shoot fresh matter, shoot dry matter and root dry matter.

ABSTRACT

Subarachnoid infusion of most contrast mediums and the steps involved in performing a cervical myelography have adverse affects that can discourage its use in the radiographic diagnosis of spinal cord diseases. Thus, the cardiovascular and respiratory alterations associated with neck flexion, subarachnoid puncture, and cerebrospinal fluid drainage during subarachnoid infusion of ioversol (320mgI/mL) in dogs under general anesthesia using isoflurane were evaluated. The dogs received subarachnoid infusion of autologous cerebrospinal fluid kept at 38°C - control group (GC); ioversol 0.3mL/kg at 25°C (GI25) and ioversol 0.3mL/kg heated to 38°C (GI38). Each dog had its heart rate (HR), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), respiratory rate (RR), oxyhemoglobin saturation (SaO2) and electrocardiography readings (PR and QT intervals) recorded. Group comparisons showed no statistical difference regarding neck positioning, subarachnoid puncture, and subarachnoid infusion of contrast medium on HR, RR and SaO2, cardiac rhythm or conduction. However, isoflurane significantly increased PR and QT intervals. Based on these findings, it is concluded that the steps involved in cervical myelography and the use of ioversol 320mgI/mL at 0.3mL/kg (25ºC and 38ºC) during cervical myelography did not result in relevant cardiovascular and respiratory alterations, except for an elevation in arterial pressure after injection of ioversol.

Foi realizada infusão do líquido cefalorraquidiano autólogo mantido a 38°C - grupo-controle (GC); infusão do ioversol 0,3mL/kg a 25°C (GI25); e infusão do ioversol 0,3mL/kg aquecido a 38°C (GI38).

ABSTRACT

We investigated the somatic maturation of neonate rats treated during the suckling period with citalopram, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Groups with 6 male neonates were randomly assigned to different treatments 24 h after birth. Each litter was suckled by one of the dams until the 21st postnatal day. Body weight, head axis and tail length were measured daily from the 1st to the 21st postnatal day. Time of ear unfolding, auditory conduit opening, incisor eruption, and eye opening was determined. Pups received 5 mg (Cit5), 10 mg (Cit10) or 20 mg/kg (Cit20) citalopram sc, or saline (0.9 percent NaCl, w/v, sc). Compared to saline, body weight was lower (24.04 percent, P < 0.01) for Cit10 from the 10th to the 21st day and for Cit20 from the 6th to the 21st day (38.19 percent, P < 0.01). Tail length was reduced in the Cit20 group (15.48 percent, P < 0.001) from the 8th to the 21st day. A reduction in mediolateral head axis (10.53 percent, P < 0.05) was observed from the 11th to the 21st day in Cit10 and from the 6th to the 21st day in Cit20 (13.16 percent, P < 0.001). A reduction in anteroposterior head axis was also observed in the Cit20 group (5.28 percent, P < 0.05) from the 13th to the 21stday. Conversely, this axis showed accelerated growth from the 12th to the 21stday in the Cit5 group (13.05 percent, P < 0.05). Auditory conduit opening was delayed in the Cit5 and Cit20 groups and incisor eruption was delayed in all citalopram groups. These findings show that citalopram injected during suckling to rats induces body alterations and suggest that the activity of the serotoninergic system participates in growth mechanisms.

ABSTRACT

The concomitant use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and aspirin may cause pharmacological antagonism. Hence we examined the effect of aspirin on the neurohormonal function and hemodynamic response to captopril in heart failure patients. Between April 1999 and August 2000, 40 patients were randomized into four equal groups: 1) captopril, 2) aspirin, 3) captopril-aspirin: captopril was given alone on the first day, followed by aspirin on the remaining days, and 4) aspirin-captopril: aspirin was given alone on the first day, followed by captopril on the remaining days. Hemodynamic, norepinephrine and prostaglandin measurements were performed pre- and post-medication for 4 days. Captopril (50 mg) was given orally every 8 h and 300 mg aspirin was given on the first day, and 100 mg/day thereafter. In the captopril group and only on the first day of captopril-aspirin, captopril produced increases in cardiac index (2.1 + or - 0.6 to 2.5 + or - 0.5 l min-1 m-2, P<0.0001), and reduced peripheral vascular resistance (1980 + or - 580 to 1545 + or - 506 dyn s-1 cm-5/m2, P<0.0001) and pulmonary wedge pressure (20 + or - 4 to 15 + or - 4 mmHg, P<0.0001). In contrast, aspirin alone or associated with captopril showed no significant hemodynamic changes. Norepinephrine decreased (P<0.02) only in the captopril group. Prostaglandin levels did not differ significantly among groups. Thus, aspirin compromises the short-term hemodynamic and neurohormonal effects of captopril in patients with acute decompensated heart failure

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Neuroleptic-induced catalepsy remains a useful method to study central dopaminergic function in rodents. Evidence obtained in several studies indicates that this phenomenon can be modified by cholinergic, histaminergic and serotonergic manipulation. Angiotensin II is a central neurotransmitter acting through AT1 and AT2 receptors. There are few data on the effect of angiotensinergic drugs on dopaminergic transmission. We investigated the effect of losartan, a nonpeptide antagonist of central and peripheral AT1 receptors, on neuroleptic-induced catalepsy. Adult male albino mice, 26-35 g, were used. Catalepsy was induced with haloperidol (H; l mg/kg, ip) and measured at 30-min intervals by means of a bar test. Losartan (10 or 100 ng/kg) or saline (control; 0.13 ml) was injected intraperitoneally 20 min before H, with each animal (7 per group) being used only once. Losartan (10 and 100 ng/kg) significantly (P<0.05) potentiated the cataleptic effect of H in comparison to the control group (e.g. 264 ñ 26 and 299 ñ 68 sec, respectively, vs 89 ñ 24 sec for the control group, 90 min after H). No differences were demonstrable 120, 150 or 180 min after H. Considering the high selectivity and the pharmacokinetic properties of losartan, these data suggest that central angiotensin AT1 receptors play a role in neuroleptic-induced catalepsy. However, further studies are necessary to confirm this hypothesis and to clarify the mechanism(s) involved in this process.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Considerable experimental evidence suggests that central dopaminergic (DA) transmission is under serotonergic (5-HTergic) modulation. For instance, neuroleptic-induced catalepsy (NIC) in rodents, a behavior mainly due to blockade of DA receptors in the striatum, can be affected by 5-HTergic manipulation. It has been shown that ligands of 5-HT1A receptors (e.g. buspirone, gepirone) reduce NIC, while 5-HT2 receptor antagonists (e.g. ritanserin) do not affect this phenomenon. However, the role of 5-HT2 receptors in the modulation of NIC is still controversial and there is evidence from behavioral models other than NIC suggesting the existence of functional interaction between the two subtypes of 5-HT receptors. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of ICI 170,809 (a selective 5-HT2 receptor antagonist) on NIC and to test the possible effect of this drug on the anticataleptic effect of gepirone (GP). Male Wistar rats weighing 300-350 g were used, and each animal (7 per group, 4 groups) was used only once. Catalepsy was induced with haloperiodol (H; 1 mg/kg, ip) and measured at 30-min intervals by means of a bar test. Animals received either ICI 170,809 (3 mg/kg, ip) or 0.9 percent saline(SL; 0.8 ml, ip) 30 min before H. At 110 min after H, the rats received GP (1 mg/kg, ip) or SL (0.8 ml, ip). GP significantly attenuated NIC (e.g. 739 + or - 106 s vs 1009 + or - 85 s for controls, at 150 min after H), while ICI 170,809 did not significantly affect the phenomenon (e.g. 978 + or - 89 s vs 1009 + or - s for controls, at 150 min after H). Pretreatment with ICI 170,809 did not significantly modify the anticataleptic effect of GP (e.g. 617 + or - 90 s vs 739 + or - 106 s for SL-pretreated animals, at 150 min after H). These results confirm reports of the anticataleptic effect of GP and the lack of effect of 5-HT2 receptor antagonists on NIC. Moreover, these data also suggest the absence of functional interactions between central 5-HT1A and 5-HT2 receptors in this model of DA transmission

ABSTRACT

Typical neuroleptics (e.g. haloperidol) can induce catalepsy in rodents. Selective 5-hydroxytryptamine1A (5-HT1A) receptor antagonists reduce neuroleptic-induced catalepsy (NIC), suggesting that this subtype of serotonin receptor plays a role in the modulation of nigrostriatal dopaminergic transmission. The present study was designed to evaluate the participation of other 5-HT receptor subtypes in NIC. Adult albino mice (both sexes, 26-35 g) were used. Catalepsy was induced with haloperidol (H; 1.5 mg/kg, ip) and measured at 30-min intervals by means of a bar test. Cyanopindolol (a 5-HT1B receptor antagonist), ICI 169,369 (a 5-HT1C/2 receptor antagonist) and granisetron (a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist) were used. Buspirone, a 5-HT1A partial antagonist, cisapride, a 5-HT3/5-HT4 ligand and clomipramine, a 5-HT neuronal uptake blocker, were also employed. These drugs were injected ip, 20 min before H, with each animal (9-10 per group) used only once. Cyanopindolol (0.3 mg/kg) or ICI 169,369 (5 mg/kg) did not significantly affect NIC (375 +/- 39 and 378 +/- 34 s vs 372 +/- 44 s for controls, at 2 h after H). Buspirone (1 mg/kg) reduced, while pretreatments with either granisetron (0.5 mg/kg), cisapride (5 mg/kg) or clomipramine (5 mg/kg) potentiated the cataleptic effect of H (107 +/- 19, 576 +/- 52, 815 +/- 76 and 800 +/- 97 s vs 374 +/- 40 s in the control group, at 2 h after H).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

ABSTRACT

Catalepsy induced by neuroleptics in rats can be modified by 5-hydroxytryptaminergic (5-HTergic) manipulation. For example, buspirone (BUS) and other central 5-HT1A receptor ligands reduce neuroleptic-induced catalepsy (NIC). The dorsal (DRN) and median (MRN) raphe nuclei are reported to be important sources of 5-HTergic projections to the basal ganglia, the site of action of neuroleptics in producing NIC. A previous study showed that lesion of DRN did not affect NIC or the anticataleptic effect of BUS. The present study was designed to evaluate the participation of MRN in NIC and in the anti-NIC effect of BUS. Twenty-four male Wistar rats (N = 6/group) weighing 220-250 g were used. Electrolytic lesion of MRN was carried out in anesthetized rats along with sham operations (electrode inserted but no current applied). Ten days later, the rats were injected with BUS (5 mg/kg, ip) or saline (1 ml, ip). Catalepsy was induced 20 min later with haloperidol (H; 1 mg/kg, ip) and measured at 30-min intervals by means of a bar test. The Costall per cent Naylor method of scoring (range 0-5 points) was used. Saline-injected MRN-lesioned rats displayed significantly lower catalepsy scores than sham-lesioned rats (1.5 +/- 0.2 vs 3.8 +/- 0.3 at 90 min after H). In sham-lesioned rats, BUS significantly reduced the catalepsy scores in comparison with saline-treated animals (1.3 +/- 0.2 vs 3.8 +/- 0.3 at 90 min after H). However, BUS was not able to further reduce NIC in the MRN-lesioned animals.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

ABSTRACT

The anxiolytic drug buspirone (BUS) and other central 5-HT-1A receptor ligands are capable of reducing neuroleptic-induced catalepsy in rodents. The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is reported to be an important source of serotonergic projections to the basal ganglia, the site of neuroleptic action. The present study was designed to evaluate the participation of the DRN in the anticataleptic effect of BUS on male Wistar rats. Rats were submitted to electrolytic or sham DRN lesion under barbiturate anesthesia. Ten days later, the animals were injected with BUS (5 mg/kg,ip) or saline ( 1 ml, ip) and catalepsy was induced 20 min later with haloperidol (1 mg/kg, ip). Saline-injected DRN-lesioned and sham-lesioned rats displayed similar catalepsy score and BUS significantly and similarly reduced the catalepsy scores in both groups. The results suggest that, in producing anticataleptic effects, BUS interacts at sites other than the DRN. The participation of other raphe nuclei in the anticataleptic effect of BUS is currently under investigation

ABSTRACT

Neuroleptcs such as chlorpromazine and haloperidol are capable of inducing catalepsy in rodents. Non-selective 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) antagonists such as methysergide reduce the cataleptic effect of haloperidol. The present study was designed to evaluate the particpation of 5-HT-1A receptors in chlorpromazine-induced catalepsy in mice. Pundolol and buspirone, two putative 5-HT-1A receptor ligands, were used. Pretreatment with these drugs reduced the cataleptic effect of chlorpromazine. Clomipramine, a 5-HT neuronal uptake blocker, reversed the inhibitory effect of buspirone. Pretreatment with clomipramine alone caused a potentiation of neuroleptic-induced catalepsy. These results suggest that central 5-HT-1A receptors play an important role in neuroleptic-induced catalepsy in mice

ABSTRACT

Medullary raphe neurons are involved in the control of sympathetic activity during desynchronized sleep. To determine if cholinergic simulation of these sites has any effect on raphe unit activity, we administered physostigmine to urethane'anesthetized rats. Most of the neurons (68%) were excited by physostigmine, suggesting the existence of cholinergic synapses which are excitatory for the majority of medullary raphe neurons

ABSTRACT

High sensitivity to ionizing raddiation is observed in Escherichia coli radC mutants. This is not seen for H2O2-treated cells but when polA mutation is also presente, cells are more sensitive than in the presence of the recA mutation. an increase in inactivation was observed for strains tested when cells are grown in minimal medium and starvation- induced resistance is observed in H2O2- treated cells
